LESSON
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
FAMILY DISCUSSION
What does the word obedience mean? Why does it please God when children obey their parents? What will God do for obedient children?
CONSIDER
No one who carries out the deed in Cana has confessed that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Neither does Jesus lay His hand on the waterpots. Yet, the obedience of the servants
results in a miracle.
Have you ever considered Captain Naaman (2 Kings 5), who was healed not because
he had extraordinary belief but because he was obedient to the words he “heard” came
from the prophet?
It is likely improbable that years ago, the mayor of New York believed in the prophet.
Nonetheless, the mayor obeyed the request and gave water for the baptism, and then it
rained.
1. MIRACLES: Manifestation of divine intervention.
2. BRIDEGROOM: A man that is about to be married.
3. CHANGERS OF MONEY: Refers to individuals who worked within the temple grounds, exchanging foreign currency for the specific coins required to pay temple taxes.
4. FEAST DAY: Refers to the Jewish Passover celebration.
5. GOVERNOR OF THE FEAST: Refers to the person in charge of overseeing the arrangements and order at a wedding banquet, essentially the "master of ceremonies" or chief steward, responsible for ensuring everything ran smoothly and according to
custom.
6. PASSOVER: Refers to a Jewish festival commemorating the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt.
7. SERVANTS: Refer to the hired helpers at a wedding feast in Cana, where Jesus performs his first miracle by turning water into wine; they are significant because they are the ones who first notice and report the change, highlighting that even those in seemingly
lower positions can be aware of Jesus' power and witness his miracles firsthand.
(Verse 5)
8. THREE FIRKINS: A unit of liquid measurement, roughly equivalent to a Hebrew "bath," which is estimated to hold around nine gallons of liquid; so, "three firkins" would mean roughly 27 gallons of water contained in one of the stone water pots mentioned in
the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. (Verse 6)
9. WATERPOTS OF STONE: Used for ceremonial washing of hands and cleansing drinking utensils. Jewish requirements for purification were strict, and the jars contained no contaminants. The miracle of turning water into wine symbolizes how Jesus'
sacrifice transformed the rituals of the law into the gospel of grace. The water represented ritual cleansing, while the wine represented blood. (Verse 6)
